| Introduction to the Original Work |
Created for Earth Day in 1990, as mentioned in "The Dharma World of Professor Yang Ying-Feng" by Chen Yi-Kai: "Concern for the realization of a pure land on earth inspired Yang to create the stainless steel work [Chang Xin] for Earth Day in 1990, responding to the environmental movement through Buddhist philosophy. This was part of a collaboration with Hsinchu Fayuan Temple and the Juefeng Buddhist Art and Culture Foundation for a series of events including 'Pure Land Lectures' and an 'Environmental Root-Seeking Tour.' The driving force behind these activities was Master Kuan-Chien, who resided at Fayuan Temple and is Yang's daughter, Han-Heng, who became a nun. This collaboration between father and daughter for an environmental event was particularly meaningful. Although he was a sculptor, what set him apart was that he was an artist who loved life, valued ecological aesthetics, and was deeply influenced by Buddhist teachings. In response to Earth Day in 1990, he used a design of circulating decorative elements surrounding a sphere to express the continuous movement of the Earth, titling the work [Chang Xin] (ever-green) as a symbol of China's participation in Earth Day activities." After the Earth Day event, [Chang Xin] was purchased by a developer from southern Taiwan and placed in front of the Liangmei Building (now Cathay Pacific Bank, Tainan City) in Tainan City. This photograph was taken during the "You You. Yang Ying-Feng. Landscape Sculpture Special Exhibition" in Chelsea, London, from May 15 to November 15, 1996.
