1. Material Selection
The cowhide currently used by "Cut Line" is all Grade A, high-fat vegetable-tanned leather from Italy. As it is a natural material, and the tanning process used by the tannery is vegetable tanning, which causes minimal damage to the leather, the surface may inevitably bear a few "scars," "wrinkles," or "veins." We do our best to avoid these during the cutting process or place them on less visible or non-load-bearing parts of the product.
2. Pure Hand Stitching
We do not use sewing machines to craft our products; all items are stitched entirely by hand. Before stitching, special awls are used to punch sewing holes in the leather, which is essential for achieving the beautiful wavy stitch effect, a key difference from machine stitching. While this significantly increases production time, it is a crucial step for leather artisans to imbue the piece with soul and a warm, tactile feel.
3. Hand Burnishing and Edge Finishing
The final step before a product is complete is burnishing and finishing the edges. This process aims to make the edges appear smooth, rounded, and natural. "Cut Line" has developed its own unique edge finishing method. First, sandpaper is used to repeatedly smooth the sharp edges of the leather. Then, an edge-finishing liquid is applied to create a level surface, repeated 2-3 times. This is followed by a layer of edge-finishing wax, and finally, a burnishing tool is used to polish the edges until they achieve a smooth finish.
4. Hand-Dyed Leather
For its hand-dyed products, "Cut Line" currently uses imported Fiebing's leather alcohol dyes from the United States. To ensure even and natural coloration, we begin by slightly dampening the leather surface with water. Then, using a sponge, we apply the dye repeatedly, gradually building from light to deep shades until the desired color is achieved. Once dry, a fixative is applied to enhance colorfastness. Finally, the surface is wiped with clean water to remove any surface dust and further unify the color.
As the dyeing is done purely by hand, there are subtle variations in color between each piece, making every item unique.
