Ming Jiajing Red-Ground and Yellow-Ceramic Cloud Dragon Pattern Covered Jar - Pottery & Ceramics - Porcelain Red

Product Description

Total Height: 28 cm Bottom Diameter: 14.7 cm Top Diameter: 11.8 cm This yellow-ground and red-ceramic ware is a new type of creation from the Jiajing period. It is initially fired at high temperatures to create a white-glazed vessel, then coated with yellow glaze and fired at a lower temperature of approximately 900 degrees Celsius to achieve the yellow glaze effect. Subsequently, iron-red enamel is applied to the surface, revealing areas with yellow patterns. Black enamel is then used for further detailing, and the piece undergoes a second low-temperature firing. In other words, even though red is the ground color, it is added after the application of the yellow glaze. The depicted imagery showcases a yellow dragon, symbolizing imperial authority, freely roaming in a red ocean, positioned above riverbanks and seawater cliffs. The interplay of red and yellow creates a harmonious and auspicious atmosphere, fully embodying the majestic presence of royal ceremonial ware. This style of yellow-ground and red-glaze decoration appears to have been particularly popular during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. During this era, such glaze decoration was highly favored by the emperor. Due to its intricate layered craftsmanship, it required three firings to complete. The process involves the initial high-temperature firing to create the ceramic body, the second high-temperature firing to achieve the yellow glaze, and finally the application of red enamel on the exterior to highlight the yellow patterns. The piece is then low-fired to dry, making it a delicate process where any mishap could jeopardize the entire work, making it challenging to produce such artifacts.
