Born in 1915, he is one of Japan's leading figures in industrial design. Sori Yanagi graduated from the Japan Academy of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) and established the Yanagi Design Institute in 1950. In 1957, his Butterfly Chair won the prestigious Golden Compass award in Milan, Italy.
Yanagi believed that hands convey the warmth and ideas behind a product more effectively. By feeling with one's hands, answers can be found. Each utensil is meticulously calculated and adjusted by hand, with form considered alongside necessity and function before design.
If one were to speak of the most admired and representative design masters of contemporary Japan, Sori Yanagi would undoubtedly be mentioned. His stainless steel kitchenware series has received the highest honor in Japanese industrial design, the Good Design Award, and he is globally recognized as one of the most respected design masters.
