Kenya chess set made of soapstone

A vintage African chess set made of soapstone, king 10,4 cm, sold together with its original board made of soapstone also, board size 36*36 cm Two areas (king and pawn) were accurately restored. Additional photos can be sent on demand This soapstone carving has all been handicrafted by artisans from Kisii District; Kenya. The soapstone carvings are all handicrafted by the Kisii people in a small place called Tabaka. They are organised in groups and Cooperative Societies.The craftsmen model each form using simple hand tools. No machinery is used in the process of transforming soapstone into hundreds of items both decorative and functional. The profits they make improves the production as well as community amenities. There is participation in decision making by all the artisans involved in the soapstone carvings.
