Have you ever experienced: • A favorite shirt's button coming loose, and you didn't know how to sew it back on? • A coat button about to fall off, but you worried your sewing wouldn't be secure enough? • A skirt hook coming undone, always fearing it might suddenly detach while wearing it? • A simple loose button that you didn't know how to fix, leading you to send it for alterations or simply put the garment away in your closet? In reality, many fastener issues on clothing can be resolved yourself with simple hand-sewing techniques. This course is centered around **"practical mending skills for everyday life."** No prior sewing experience is needed. Starting with threading a needle and tying a knot, it guides students to build fundamental fastener mending abilities, empowering you to care for your own clothes and ensuring your beloved garments can accompany you for longer. **Sewing is more than just making clothes; it's an act of caring for your belongings.** When we invest a little time in mending and maintenance, we also extend the time each garment can be with us. In this class, you will learn: 1. Introduction to Basic Sewing Tools • An overview of common hand-sewing tools • How to choose different needles and threads • Techniques for using a seam ripper 2. Fundamental Hand-Sewing Skills • Threading a needle • Using single and double threads • Tying knots and securing thread ends 3. Most Common Fastener Mending Techniques for Daily Life • Sewing four-hole/two-hole buttons • Sewing covered buttons • Sewing snap fasteners • Sewing skirt hooks • Techniques for sewing thread shanks (shank buttons) 4. How to apply mending techniques to everyday clothing maintenance, understanding the suitable situations for different fasteners, such as: • Loose shirt buttons • Reinforcing coat buttons • Repairing skirt hooks • Replacing snap fasteners • Routine maintenance and reinforcement of fasteners Course Features This is a summer-limited small class workshop, conducted in a small group of 4. It is suitable for students with absolutely no prior sewing experience. In this 2-hour session, the instructor will provide complete demonstrations of each technique and guide students step-by-step through practice samples. Compared to one-on-one sessions, small classes offer longer lesson times, allowing ample opportunity for each student to practice, ask questions, and grasp the techniques. It also fosters peer learning, encouraging exchange and interaction. **All necessary tools and shared materials are provided for the class.** Students do not need to bring any sewing supplies; just come with a relaxed mindset. The completed fastener mending practice samples can be taken home as a reference for future self-mending of buttons, snap fasteners, and skirt hooks. Should you wish to purchase tools or materials for continued practice after the class, you are welcome to inquire with the instructor during the session. For ongoing practice needs, tools or materials can be purchased separately based on your requirements. There is no need to buy a complete kit upfront; you can select individual tools or materials as needed. If you prefer to have all the necessary tools from the course, a complete kit is also available for purchase. (If you already have suitable needle and thread tools at home, you are welcome to use your own and do not need to purchase new ones.)
