The slip develops subtle variations in texture due to differences in thickness. The bowl features scattered spots, like halos of light. This characteristic is known as Gohon-te. It emerges when the clay, white slip, and glaze interact within the kiln, achieving a perfect balance of conditions. The Japanese consider this phenomenon a symbol of good fortune. The glaze is a glossy celadon. Fine cracks may appear on the surface after use; these are called "kannyu" or "craquelure" and are a normal variation in the glaze. . For first-time use, prepare a pot of rice water. Line the bottom of the pot with a paper towel, place the tableware in the pot, submerge it completely, and simmer for twenty minutes. Allow it to cool. The starch from the rice will fill the pores of the ceramic surface, preventing future stains and odors. This process can be repeated periodically for maintenance.
