■ About Sapphires
Stone language: Sincerity, Dignity, Benevolence, Stone of the Clergy, Gem of the Heavens, Jewel of the Sky, September Birthstone
With a hardness of 9 in the hexagonal crystal system, they are second only to diamonds. Therefore, finely cut stones are very expensive. Sapphires are precious stones primarily produced in Asia. The name originates from the Latin word "sapphirus," meaning blue. They are called "Gem of the Heavens" or "Jewel of the Sky" due to their resemblance to the various colors of the sky throughout the day.
*The sapphires in this piece are of exceptionally high transparency. Inclusions (internal cracks, black spots, etc.) may be visible depending on the stone.
【Bonus Column: Sapphires are the Navel of the World】
Sapphires belong to the mineral species called corundum, composed of aluminum and oxygen. They are found in igneous and metamorphic rocks that do not contain silicon... Have you ever played as a child, searching for clear sand or small pebbles in the schoolyard? That is silicon. Silicon is abundant in the Earth's crust, making environments devoid of silicon very rare, limited to metamorphic zones of ultra-high temperature and pressure. This occurred in the center of a supercontinent that existed about 700 to 500 million years ago, the Gondwana continent. Gondwana was a supercontinent at that time, and its center formed an ultra-high pressure metamorphic belt where most of today's continents collided, creating the conditions for the formation of corundum (sapphire) with a Mohs hardness of 9. The continents of Mozambique, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and India were all joined together, and in this rare central environment, metamorphic sapphires were formed (volcanic sapphires also exist). Rather than sapphires originating from various places, the single location where sapphires formed later dispersed across the world.
Sapphires are, in a sense, evidence of the former "navel of the Earth." Collecting sapphires holds a romance akin to gathering fragments of the Earth. Since the Earth's crustal energy has decreased over the past 700 million years, an event like the formation of the Gondwana supercontinent may be a phenomenon that occurs only once in Earth's history. Within a single small, beautiful sapphire, the pulse of the Earth is hidden.
