**Eastern Grass Owl**
Also known as the "Monkey-Faced Owl," the Eastern Grass Owl can be found in regions including Taiwan, the Philippines, China, and Australia. In Taiwan, it is the only owl species that builds its nests on the ground. They remain hidden in the grass during the day and emerge at night to hunt.
A masterful low-altitude flyer, the Eastern Grass Owl plays a crucial role as a natural pest controller, helping to manage rodent populations in Taiwan's agriculture. However, widespread poisoning to eliminate rats, which began in the 1960s, led to the owl's poisoning and death, causing a significant decline in their once stable numbers. Fortunately, in recent years, Taiwan's central government has ceased subsidizing local authorities' purchase of rat poison, and the concept of eco-friendly agriculture has gained increasing acceptance among farmers, allowing the Eastern Grass Owl to continue its existence.
**IUCN Status: Least Concern (LC)**
