Indian miniature painting is a painting art developed in North India from the 16th to the 19th century. It was influenced by Persian miniature painting and later developed its own style. They were generally illustrated in books, but also circulated in large independent albums, and their subjects included battle scenes, legends, hunting scenes, wild animals, royal life, mythology, and personal self-portraits.
Characterized by realistic depictions of subject matter, Indian miniature painting later spread to other Indian courts, including Muslim and Hindu kingdoms, and later the Sikh Empire, and was often used to depict Hindu subjects.
