| Original Artwork Introduction |
Completed in 1953, this work was designed as a medal for the "China Daily Scholarship." Its circular form is similar to that of the artwork titled "Encounter." The design eschews realism in favor of a simplified, symbolic representation. The shepherd boy, the ox, and the birds are all depicted with the most basic strokes. The limbs of the shepherd boy and the ox are simplified into triangular shapes, aligning with the medal's design requirement for clarity and ease of understanding. The shepherd boy and the ox are recurring themes in Yang's "Rustic Series" prints. The scene depicts a lovely day with flowers in full bloom. An ox stands among the flowers under the shade of a tree, with a bird perched on its horn. The spiral pattern on the bird's body hints at the nascent stages of his Shang Dynasty-inspired series. Seated on the ox's back is a shepherd boy engrossed in reading, his smile conveying the contentment and joy derived from learning, echoing the scholarship's purpose of encouraging academic pursuit. It is also known as "Birds Chirping, Flowers Blooming, A Day for Reading."
