**Map-Reading Postcard - Yushan**
Yushan is Taiwan's highest peak and the tallest mountain in East Asia.
Over a century ago, Japanese explorers first ascended Yushan, determining its height to be greater than Mount Fuji, which symbolized the Japanese spirit. Emperor Meiji subsequently bestowed upon it the name "Niitakayama."
In earlier times, reaching Yushan often involved taking a train on the Duoduoqia logging railway, departing from Alishan to Duoduoqia (Tataga), and then beginning the trek upwards. The route passed by Yushan's Front, West, and Niitakashita outposts (now Paiyun Lodge) before ascending the main peak.
This illustration depicts a west-to-east perspective. Most common photographs of Yushan's main peak are taken from a north-to-south viewpoint, looking south from Yushan's North Peak towards the main summit.
