About Wood Firing
'Wood firing' is a traditional kiln firing method that reaches temperatures exceeding 1200 degrees Celsius using firewood.
The natural 'fire marks' left by the direct flames on the clay body and the ash naturally falling from the burning wood create a warm, lustrous, and rich variation in color that electric or gas kilns cannot replicate.
Compared to ordinary electric and gas kilns, the entire wood firing process, from stacking the kiln, lighting the fire, sealing the kiln, to cooling it down, takes approximately 8-10 days.
Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors such as humidity, wood dryness, the rate of wood addition, and kiln placement, can all influence the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher damage rate.
Experienced wood-firing artists meticulously consider the airflow dynamics when stacking the kiln, planning the placement of pieces of varying sizes, estimating the ascent of the flame path, the timing of wood and charcoal addition, and the control of the fire. Every step requires utmost concentration to present a perfect wood-fired piece.
