Collection description
Castiglione (1688-1766 AD) was an Italian. At the age of 19, he entered the Catholic Jesuit order as a monk. He studied oil painting and architecture. He came to China at the age of 27 and served the imperial court as a painter. He served in Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong. During the Three Dynasties, he was good at painting figures, flowers and birds, especially dogs and horses. In the eighth year of Qianlong's reign (1743), Nuomen Erhetu, the king of Horqin County, paid tribute to a horse. Lang was ordered to sketch it. The size was similar to that of a real horse, vivid and lifelike.
