1. Material Selection
The cowhide leather currently used by "Cut Line School" is all Grade A, full-grain vegetable-tanned leather sourced from Italy. As a natural material crafted using the gentlest vegetable-tanning process, it’s common to find minor natural imperfections such as slight "scars," "wrinkles," or "vein marks" on the leather surface. We carefully select our pieces during the cutting process, prioritizing areas that are less visible or not load-bearing in the final product.
2. Hand-Stitched Seams
Our products are entirely hand-stitched; we do not use sewing machines. Before stitching, special diamond chisels are used to punch precise holes in the leather, which allows for the creation of beautiful, wave-like stitch lines – a distinctive mark of true craftsmanship compared to machine stitching. While this significantly extends production time, it's a crucial step that imbues each leather piece with the soul and warm texture only a leather artisan can provide.
3. Hand-Burnished Edges
The final step before a piece is complete is the careful burnishing and finishing of the leather edges. To achieve smooth, rounded, and natural-looking edges, "Cut Line School" employs its own unique finishing method. We begin by repeatedly sanding the edges with sandpaper to smooth any sharp contours, then apply an edge finishing liquid for a refined appearance. This process is repeated 2-3 times, followed by a coat of edge wax. Finally, a burnishing tool is used to repeatedly polish the edges until they achieve a smooth, lustrous finish.
4. Hand-Dyed Leather
For our hand-dyed items, "Cut Line School" exclusively uses imported Fiebing's leather alcohol dyes from the USA. To ensure even and natural coloration, we first lightly dampen the leather surface with water. Then, using a sponge, we apply the dye layer by layer, progressing from lighter to deeper tones until the desired hue is achieved. Once dry, a sealant is applied to enhance colorfastness. Finally, a light application of water is spread and wiped across the surface to remove any residual dust and further even out the color.
As each piece is dyed entirely by hand, subtle variations in color will exist between items, ensuring that each bag is truly one-of-a-kind.
