Product Description

▰▰▰▰▰▰AMITA▰▰▰▰▰▰ Founded in Kobe in 1932, Amita was re-established as the Amita Damascene factory in Kyoto in 1946, following World War II. In 1952, the Japanese government officially designated Amita Damascene Co., Ltd. as an export retailer (duty-free shop). The company produced numerous items for export to the West, allowing the curator to acquire some Japanese pieces from Western collections. The art of metal inlay work, known as Damascene, can be traced back over 2,000 years to the ancient Syrian capital of Damascus. It was later introduced to the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century by the Moors, and around the same time, it traveled to Japan via the Silk Road. The technique involves using a base of iron or copper alloy, upon which fine lines are incised. Thin sheets of genuine gold and silver are then shaped into patterns and hammered into these incisions. A process of lacquering and firing is applied to prevent oxidation and rust of the base metal, followed by sanding and polishing. Finally, intricate micro-engraving techniques are employed before the inlay is set into jewelry. ▰▰▰▰▰▰VINTAGE JEWELRY DETAILS▰▰▰▰▰▰ Brand: AMITA JAPAN Era: 1940s - 1950s Materials: Soft iron inlaid with 24K gold and sterling silver patterns, lacquered, gold-plated alloy casing Dimensions: Fan approx. 2.6 × 3.6 cm; Cherry Blossom approx. 2.6 × 2.7 cm Condition: Good, with minor signs of age.
