Dadaocheng has been a trading center for southern and northern goods and Chinese medicinal materials since ancient times. Whether used as medicine or in daily conditioning, these natural herbs are deeply rooted in the lives of Taiwanese people.
These familiar herbs can also be transformed into gorgeous natural dyes, giving fabrics warm and unique colors!
This class will explore the history of Dadaocheng, understand the development of northern and southern goods trading companies, and the relationship between the dyeing industry and port trade. Learn about the differences between natural plant dyeing and modern chemical dyeing through explanations by craftsmen, and explore the charm of traditional dyeing techniques.
During the course, students will learn how to use tie-dyeing, round-cap dyeing and other techniques from craftsmen, using natural Chinese medicinal materials given by the earth to dye the fabrics, giving them unique textures and colors.
