"Don't stray from the right path."
Originating from World War II, the tetrapod was initially a battlefield device designed to block tanks. After the war, when abandoned by the sea, its excellent wave-dissipating properties were discovered, leading to the coastal scenery we see today. Resembling zongzi (rice dumplings), it's colloquially known as "jong-a-gaek" in Taiwanese Hokkien. There's even an urban legend in Taiwan that straying into organized crime could lead to one being made into a tetrapod. However, along Taiwan's 1,338-kilometer coastline, tetrapods, harbors, and seawalls constitute a significant 753 kilometers. These artificial concrete structures raise questions about their impact on coastal ecosystems and the connection between humans and the ocean, prompting us to reflect.
