They inhabit freshwater environments such as lakes, rivers, streams, and ponds. They also frequent coastal areas, returning to freshwater zones when necessary for cleaning. In Taiwan, Eurasian Otters have become extinct on the main island due to habitat pollution, attacks by stray animals, and overhunting. Their presence is now confined to Kinmen. Globally, the Eurasian Otter is listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List.
