The phalanges of cats are the bones that form a cat's paw, and are part of a cat's limb bones. Each of a cat's toes is composed of three phalanges (proximal, middle, and distal phalanges), but the first toe of the hind limb (similar to a human thumb) is typically vestigial or absent. Cat phalanges provide support and flexibility during walking and jumping, enabling their agile movements. The distal phalanges are connected to retractable claws, aiding cats in hunting, climbing, and in offensive or defensive actions.
