It is native to north-central Mexico and blooms in early spring, requiring cross-pollination. Its Latin name translates to "many grooves, many ribs," making its fascinating ribbed structure instantly captivating. It boasts a truly distinctive shape and is a wonderfully easy-to-care-for cactus. 🌵 | Morphological Characteristics | *Stenocactus multicostatus* typically grows solitary. The stem is columnar, with a diameter of 9-10 cm and a height of 25-30 cm, appearing deep green. It features 13-21 ribs, 20-30 radial spines, and 7-15 central spines, each about 2 cm long, with a reddish-brown hue. The flowers are purplish-red. | Cultivation Methods | *Stenocactus multicostatus* thrives in well-draining soil. It prefers warm, dry, and sunny environments (full sun is ideal, but it needs shade during hot summers). Water thoroughly when the soil has dried out. Reduce watering in winter and keep the soil relatively dry. It is relatively cold-hardy (tolerating temperatures down to -5°C in winter), drought-tolerant, and can handle partial shade, but it is not tolerant of waterlogged conditions. Young seedlings are sensitive to excessive dryness and strong sunlight. Repotting is necessary periodically. Growth slows when the cactus reaches a diameter of 10 cm, at which point a new transplanting schedule is needed, ideally every 2-3 years.
