Basin Name: "Path to the Hidden Sanctuary"
Origin: Tang Dynasty, Chang Jian's "On the Mountain Temple's Rear Zen Courtyard"
"A winding path leads to seclusion, where the Zen room is deep amidst flowers and trees."
Poet's Background:
Chang Jian, a poet of the High Tang period, was renowned for his depictions of secluded and Zen forest scenery. His verses often infused scenery with Zen philosophy, possessing a simple yet profound ethereal quality. "On the Mountain Temple's Rear Zen Courtyard" is a representative work, conveying a spiritual state of deep immersion in Buddhism and communion with nature.
Design Interpretation:
The "Path to the Hidden Sanctuary" is not merely a mossy path leading to a shrine; it is also a passage towards inner tranquility. The torii gate transcends its cultural symbolism to become the threshold of the soul. Each step traverses not just shaded paths and stone trails, but also the mind's restlessness and worldly clamor. The winding path leads to seclusion, where faint light filters through, as if a gentle spiritual energy flows, beckoning one into a state of quiet contemplation.
This design specifically features *Podocarpus macrophyllus* as the main plant. Its delicate, upright leaves and elegant form symbolize the character of a gentleman and the cultivation of the mind. Other suitable replacements, depending on the space, include fine-leaved bamboo varieties or dwarf variegated bamboo, all small bamboo plants with an Eastern aesthetic, to create a simple, Zen-like atmosphere with a sense of grandeur in a Japanese style.

A Little About Torii Gates:
The torii gate is the most iconic symbol of Japanese shrines. It is not merely decorative but serves as a boundary—marking the transition from the secular world to the sacred realm. Torii gates vary in form across different shrines and historical periods. Two common types include:
Miyojin Torii (明神鳥居)
Features: The top crossbeam has a slight upward curve in the center and is highly decorative. This is the most representative form found in most shrines across Japan. The upward curve of the crossbeam is said to symbolize prayers ascending to heaven.
Double-Torii (二部鳥居)
Features: Additional diagonal support pillars are added behind the main pillars, providing a stable structure and a solemn feel. This hybrid style emerged due to the syncretism of Buddhism and Shintoism, seen at shrines like Kasuga Taisha. The entrance torii in our creation belongs to this category.
Furthermore, the number of torii gates can hold significance. For instance, **Senbon Torii (千本鳥居)**, or thousands of torii gates, symbolize continuous prayers or offerings, with Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shrine being a prime example of this style.
Plant Description:
*Podocarpus macrophyllus* (Japanese Yew Podocarpus) has slender leaves and an upright posture that complements the common greenery found in Japanese shrines. It is not only elegant in appearance but also symbolizes longevity and purity. In East Asian culture, *Podocarpus macrophyllus* has always been associated with gentlemanly virtues such as "academic success" and "integrity." It thrives in shade, has dense foliage, and is easily pruned and shaped, making it a popular choice for indoor landscape plants.
