It is native to the luxuriant Amazon Rainforest, the world’s largest tropical rainforest occupying the drainage basin of the Amazon River in northern South America. The Dracaena is a unique species compared to other trees from the rainforest of Peru, despite growing in fertile soil with favorable environment, it has a very slow growth rate and its trunk only gets a few inches longer over hundreds of years. When the tree bark is cut, it releases dark red mucus. According to legend, the first dragon blood tree was created from the blood of a dragon that was wounded when it fought an elephant in the ancient time. Like the unfortunate dragon, the tree secretes blood-colored mucus when it is injured and people believe that it is the dragon’s blood. This tree is therefore called a dragon blood tree, or “bleeding tree”. In fact, dragon blood is not really the blood of any magical beast; it is, however, the resin of the Dracaena tree. Crystalized dragon blood is a valuable Chinese medicine with fascinating clinical benefits, it was an ideal hemostatic drug during the Vietnam War. It is said that dragon blood is magical with various mysterious powers. Spanish explorers in the early 17th century found indigenous people in South America used dragon blood when practicing tribal rituals and alchemy, aiming to boost one’s spiritual power and compose medicine for curing diseases.
