Tong Fa Iron Gate Bell

The "Tong Fa" iron gate (also known as a carved iron gate) is a highly representative piece of indigenous Hong Kong craftsmanship and folk aesthetics from the 1950s and 60s, meticulously hand-wrought by blacksmiths who twisted metal and chiseled through iron plates. These traditional folding gates were commonly found in the ground-floor shops of old tenement buildings in older districts or with established businesses (such as hardware stores, grocery stores, or printing factories). More than just a security device, it embodies the community history of old Hong Kong's "shop in front, home in back" lifestyle. Early ground-floor shops in tenement buildings typically lacked back windows and air conditioning, making ventilation extremely poor in those pre-air-conditioned days. To allow air circulation indoors, shopkeepers would drill holes and carve patterns into the iron plates of the distinctive herringbone folding gates. This also allowed sunlight to penetrate the interiors, casting unique geometric shadows on the shop floors, combining aesthetics, ventilation, and light. The patterns on "Tong Fa" iron gates varied widely. In addition to displaying shop names, logos, or addresses, the most common geometric decorations included the "Wan Zi Fu" (a symbol of longevity) and "Chang Shou Hua" (a flower symbolizing longevity and peace). The gate bodies were usually coated with thick anti-rust silver paint (aluminum powder paint), which, over the years, would develop unique traces of rust and peeling. With most shops now opting for stainless steel roller shutters, traditional "Tong Fa" iron gates are gradually disappearing from Hong Kong streets, becoming a rare sight.
