This necklace is crafted by connecting Junne excavated beads, ancient agate, old Orissa brass, Chin silver, and more.
The beads used are from Junne, Africa, excavated from archaeological sites (circa 7th-13th centuries). Each bead possesses a unique character, with some exhibiting a beautiful iridescence. Many also show signs of patina, a natural layer formed over time. When held up to the light, those with lighter patina reveal a stunning sapphire hue. Iridescence occurs when glass, buried for centuries, undergoes a chemical reaction with the soil, resulting in a sparkling sheen. This phenomenon is not universal to all buried glass.
(Size of Junne excavated beads: 0.3-0.6 mm)
The circular part of the clasp and the blue and indigo blue beads near the clasp are Indo-Pacific beads. The origins of Indo-Pacific beads are said to date back to the 2nd century BC. These particular beads are excavated artifacts from Indonesia, dating back to the 10th century – over 1000 years old!
Beautifully graduated grey, lustrous ancient agate beads have been incorporated. These were excavated from the Indus River basin, spanning regions like Pakistan and India, and are approximately 2000 years old. They showcase exquisite banding and a soft, pleasing gradient.
The faceted beads and plump, pot-shaped silver beads that sandwich the ancient agate are exceptionally rare old Chin silver. These are heirloom pieces from around the 18th-19th centuries, originating from Burma. They were used by Chin women in necklaces and other adornments, displaying a unique wear and endearing marks of time. Their substantial feel and presence are incomparable to modern silver (though some modern pieces are also striking). These antique beads have seen a significant price increase in recent years.
The golden beads are old Orissa brass, ancient and rare beads from the state of Orissa in India. The charm near the clasp is also old brass from India.
Each Karen silver bead is individually stamped! It's almost mind-boggling to think of the painstaking, all-handcrafted process involved. The slightly bent clasp is also Karen silver, treated with an oxidation finish.
◇ Karen Silver ◇
This silver is crafted by the hill tribes living in the Thai-Burmese border region. Each piece is handmade and is said to have a very high purity.
The necklace is strung on waxed cord, which may feel slightly stiff initially but will become supple with wear.
This necklace invites contemplation of times over a millennium ago.
