**A New Concept for 108 Bead Bracelets**
The traditional view of 108 bead bracelets being solely for Buddhist practitioners is rather outdated.
While 108 bead bracelets do originate from Buddhist scriptures and their length allows for multiple wraps around the wrist or wearing as a necklace, their materials, designs, and decorative uses have evolved with the times. They are now more fashionable, layered, and versatile, requiring designers to adapt to user preferences and create unique, customized pieces.
Furthermore, 108 has never been exclusively for Buddhists. Even those who are not Buddhist can appreciate the auspicious meaning of 108 and its potential for layered styling.
We often share with our clients that a 108 bracelet is an external object. Whether we are Buddhist or not, the practice of chanting or praying is primarily an internal one. We should not be bound or hindered by material possessions, nor should we be fixated on the material, count, method of handling, or which wrist to wear the bracelet on.
One should use prayer beads for convenience and freedom, as stated in the Diamond Sutra: "All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows; like dew drops and flashes of lightning; so you should contemplate them thus." Bracelets and prayer beads are also phenomena, and thus should not be overly scrutinized when used. **Comfort should be the primary consideration.**
**The Origin of 108 Prayer Beads**
108 prayer beads represent 108 worldly desires, or afflictions. Within the six senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and mind, there are three types of feelings: pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral. Combined with the three qualities of good, bad, and neutral within each of the six senses, this totals 18. Multiplying this by three times (past, present, and future) results in 54. Doubling this figure (representing the two states of purity and impurity) gives us 108. This signifies that sentient beings have 108 kinds of afflictions, which can give rise to various negative karmas. Therefore, one must eradicate these 108 afflictions to achieve a state of tranquility for the body and mind. Wearing prayer beads serves as a constant reminder to cultivate the compassion of a Buddha or Bodhisattva, maintaining a calm and composed demeanor in any environment.
In Tibetan, prayer beads are called "changwa," which means to remember, think of, or recall. It also implies continuity. It represents the constant remembrance of gurus, yidams, dakinis, and dharma protectors; and also signifies that gurus, yidams, dakinis, and dharma protectors are constantly mindful of us, bestowing siddhis and wisdom.
**Blue Lace Agate**
Blue Lace Agate, with its trace copper salts, reveals beautiful blue, light blue, and white patterns, exuding a delicate and elegant charm.
Agate is one of the oldest gemstones in history, traditionally regarded as a stone of protection, used to ward off nightmares, stress, and fatigue.
Blue Lace Agate emanates a tranquil aura, bringing peace and serenity. It aids in developing grace, composure, patience, and fostering creativity.
**Lapis Lazuli**
Ancient Chinese texts record the use of Lapis Lazuli dating back five thousand years, with Egyptians using it even earlier, around eight thousand years ago. Chinese emperors of various dynasties used Lapis Lazuli for celestial sacrifices, believing its blue color represented the heavens and that it was a stone that could connect with the divine. Egyptians believed it facilitated communication with the afterlife.
The finest quality Lapis Lazuli in the world comes from Afghanistan. Afghan Lapis Lazuli is known for its pure and majestic blue color, earning it the reputation of "Imperial Blue."
When selecting Lapis Lazuli, look for a good natural distribution of blue, white (calcite), and gold (pyrite). As Lapis Lazuli is formed near the earth's surface and has porous surfaces, it is not suitable for prolonged contact with water. It is recommended to nourish it regularly with mineral oil.
**Cloisonné Enamel (Filigree Enamel, Baked Enamel)**
Cloisonné enamel, scientifically known as copper-body filigree enamel, originated in the ancient Near East. As early as the 19th century BC, ancient Egyptian pharaohs crafted necklaces using this technique, often combined with gemstone inlays. The Eastern Roman Empire later elevated this craft to a very high level. It was introduced to China during the Yuan Dynasty and reached its peak during the Jingtai period of the Ming Dynasty, hence its name "Jingtai Lan" (Cloisonné).
Exquisite cloisonné pieces feature lustrous and vibrant colors, a thick and solid base, neat and uniform filigree, and brilliant gilding. They embody the warmth of jade, the brilliance of jewels, and the delicacy of porcelain. Consequently, the cloisonné process is intricate and costly.
**Ruyi**
The term "Ruyi" is easily understood as "as one wishes," signifying the fulfillment of desires.
The Ruyi is typically formed by a cloud pattern or lingzhi mushroom at the top connected to a long handle, occasionally represented solely by the shape of a lingzhi or cloud.
The Qing Dynasty's "Shi Wu Yi Ming Lu" records that "Ruyi was an ancient claw stick," meaning it was a back-scratcher for ancient people (akin to a modern back scratcher).
Furthermore, "Ruyi" was also used by ancient officials as a note-taking object ("hu" or "chaohu") when attending court, and in warfare, it was used as a banner to direct troops. Therefore, Ruyi symbolizes wisdom, power, and auspiciousness.
We often see Bodhisattvas holding Ruyi:
"Ruyi Guanyin" holds a Ruyi, symbolizing her ability to perceive all things, rescue in times of crisis, avert danger, ensure success in all endeavors, and bring peace of mind.
"Manjushri Bodhisattva" is the Bodhisattva symbolizing wisdom. He holds various implements, each with a different meaning: holding a sword signifies cutting through afflictions; holding a blue lotus symbolizes pure wisdom untainted by defilement; holding a Ruyi represents wisdom and auspiciousness. Therefore, Ruyi also signifies wisdom.

**◈ On Usage and Collection**
1. Natural gemstones possess natural luster and unique textures (fine black spots, stone lines, ice cracks, cloudy inclusions, mineral deficiencies, asymmetry, and other natural details). By wearing them frequently, you will observe subtle color changes in the natural gemstones, which typically become more translucent and captivating. This is also the best method of maintenance.
Natural organic gemstones (such as coral and amber) have low hardness and are susceptible to acids and alkalis. When encountering dirt, avoid using cleaning agents. Simply clean with water and wipe with a soft cloth. You may also use a soft brush dipped in a small amount of mineral oil (such as baby oil) for gentle care.
2. Metal jewelry has a very long lifespan, provided it is protected from external damage or strong acids and alkalis that may cause fading.
3. Fabric materials (ribbon, cotton, gauze) have a soft and comfortable texture and a long lifespan, but should be kept away from high temperatures, external damage, or strong acids and alkalis that may cause fading.
4. For jewelry of any material, when encountering dirt, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with water as appropriate, or use a moderate amount of neutral detergent for suitable materials. After washing, ensure it is dried promptly.
5. When jewelry is removed, it should be carefully packaged and stored to minimize exposure to air, slowing down oxidation and discoloration. Avoid stacking or placing heavy objects on it.
