Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese: 葛飾 北斎 / かつしか ほくさい; October 31, 1760 – May 10, 1849) was born Tokitaro Nakajima in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) in 1760. He was a prominent Ukiyo-e artist during Japan's late Edo period and a key figure of the Japanese Bunsei culture. Hokusai began learning woodblock printing at the age of 14 and studied painting under Katsukawa Shunsho at 18, embarking on a long and prolific artistic career. In 1826, to support the burgeoning domestic tourism industry and fueled by his personal fascination with Mount Fuji, Hokusai created the series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji." This series brought him widespread fame, with "Fine Wind, Clear Morning" (Red Fuji) and "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" being the most renowned. His daughter, Katsushika Ōi, was also a notable artist. Hokusai, born in the Katsushika village in eastern Edo, was later adopted by a family of mirror polishers. In his youth, he worked as a delivery boy for a lending library. In his spare time, he pursued painting illustrations, studying under artists like Katsukawa Shunsho and Tawaraya Sōri.
