About Sun Shao-Ying Born in Shandong in 1931, he came to Taiwan in 1949 and worked in the art departments of Kuang Chi Society and Taiwan Television for over 30 years. After retiring in 1991, he returned to his wife's hometown, Puli, to embark on a new chapter dedicated to painting and writing. His artworks possess a unique contemplative spirit, evoking a sense of serenity after experiencing life's turmoil and challenges. His style, characterized by its clear, smooth, and tranquil hues, along with his brushstrokes and artistic essence, is simple yet profound. This has endeared him to collectors, and he has been invited to exhibit his work over 40 times both domestically and internationally. In 1999, he made a remarkable contribution by documenting the 921 earthquake with his sketches, a groundbreaking endeavor. In 2006, he initiated the "Taiwan Series" sketching project, releasing one book and exhibition annually. This series includes titles such as "Journey to Alishan," "Taiwanese Small Towns," "Taiwan's Outlying Islands," "Lishui Puli," "Taiwanese Traditional Crafts," "Water's Edge - A Watercolor Record of Sun Moon Lake," and "Lotus Breeze, Orchid Charm," with the new book "The Joy of Sketching" released in 2015. His abundant creativity and insightful observations of the world, coupled with his plein air sketching as a form of performance art, are unparalleled. His watercolors are simple, bright, and fluid, astonishing in their depiction of form, structure, negative space, and emotional depth. Owning his paintings or art books is akin to preserving the most beautiful imagery of Taiwan.
