The dried bark of the Amur cork tree is called Oubaku and has been used as a crude drug since ancient times. The wood has a beautiful grain and a calm, slightly greenish hue. The shape that flares upwards is called "Shiho Korobi" (four directions leaning), and its processing requires high precision. Although it is a simple shape, calculating the angles of the joints is surprisingly difficult. Thin plates called "sane" are inserted into the joints to increase strength. A darker wood species is used for the thin plates, which also serves as an accent. (Photos 5-7 show the temporary assembly.)
