[Content Introduction]
Lin Xi's calligraphic title: "May I Be Able To"
May I be able to enter the four types of love in this world with what kind of steps. This book compiles essays and new poems by Lin Xi on the themes of self-love, friendship, romantic love, and a profound love for the world. It also includes his first writings about his childhood home—Tai Nan West Street, recounting fragments of past life experiences. Are these reflections merely fleeting glimpses, or something more?
May I be able to sing a song of happiness without cost. This song is for blood relatives; for close friends; for lovers who break one's heart; or perhaps, extending further, for a great love for the world and others. Love takes many forms, yet it originates from a single point. Lin Xi has written extensively about this point, in lyrics and essays, always conveying the message: To love others, one must first love oneself. If one cannot love oneself, how can one truly love another?
Before these four types of love, no matter how insignificant one may feel; love, beginning with oneself, requires unwavering courage. Loving oneself is not just a slogan; it is a realization that love is a journey of self-discovery and practice. May I be able to...
As he writes in the book:
//Once one steps into a crowd,
A person truly becomes one.
Continuing onward, forced to the edge of life,
What one loves to do can no longer be done,
So what one is happy to do becomes even more.
Including, after the rain,
Holding up the blue sky,
Including
Walking in the rain with pride,
Or holding an umbrella with peace of mind.
Indifferent to the downpour of the world,
Only concerned if others are caught in the rain,
Only then can one dare to respect oneself.
Without concern for oneself,
One attains the long-desired freedom.
After cycles of having and losing,
Finding one's faith in others,
Preserving pure emotions amidst complex human nature,
Following a parabola unwilling to repeat,
The happiness one pursues
Is attained
With final maturity.//
