Material Selection The cowhide leather currently used by "Qie Xian Pai" (Cut Line School) is all Grade A, high-oil vegetable-tanned leather sourced from Italy. As it is a natural material, and the tannery employs vegetable tanning methods that minimally damage the leather's natural properties, small "scars," "wrinkles," and "veins" are unavoidable on the surface. We strive to avoid these during the cutting process, or we position these areas on less visible or non-load-bearing parts of the product. 2. Pure Hand Stitching We do not use sewing machines for our products; all items are meticulously hand-stitched. Before stitching, specialized pricking irons are used to mark the stitch holes in the leather, which allows for the creation of beautiful, wavy stitch lines – the most significant difference from machine stitching. While this considerably increases production time, it is a crucial step where the leather artisan infuses the piece with soul and a gentle, tactile warmth. 3. Hand-Burnished Edges The final step before a product is complete is the burnishing and finishing of the edges. Our goal is to achieve smooth, rounded, and natural-looking edges. "Qie Xian Pai" employs its own unique edge finishing technique. First, sandpaper is used to repeatedly smooth the sharp edges of the leather. Then, a layer of edge sealant is applied to create a flat surface. This process is repeated 2-3 times, followed by a coat of edge wax. Finally, a burnishing tool is used to polish the edges until they appear perfectly smooth. 4. Hand-Dyed Leather For its hand-dyed products, "Qie Xian Pai" currently uses imported Fiebing's leather alcohol dyes from the United States. To achieve even and natural coloration, we begin by slightly dampening the leather surface with water. Then, using a sponge, we apply the dye repeatedly, gradually building from light to deep tones until the desired color is achieved. After drying, a color fixative is applied to enhance colorfastness. Finally, a light application of water is brushed onto the surface to remove any surface dust and further even out the color. As the dyeing is done entirely by hand, each piece will have subtle variations in color, making every item truly one of a kind.
