Palo Santo, meaning "holy wood" in South America, is a sacred tree used in indigenous American rituals for thousands of years, holding immense cultural significance. Lower grades were burned in ceremonies to purify spaces and connect with the spirit world. Medium grades were crafted into wands and ceremonial staffs, while the highest quality wood was reserved for divine worship and was forbidden from being harvested.
In Peru, Palo Santo is designated as a national heritage wood, and its felling is strictly regulated. Only a select few companies hold legal permits for its sustainable harvesting.
The name "Palo Santo" aptly translates to "holy wood" in South America, reflecting its sacred and medicinal properties developed throughout its life cycle. A Palo Santo tree typically lives for 80-90 years before naturally dying. It then requires a resting period of 4-10 years to complete its transformation. Only after this complete process does the wood fully develop its potent properties. For millennia, shamans and spiritual practitioners in Peru and Ecuador have utilized Palo Santo in their rituals, a practice that continues to be widespread among healers and shamans in the Andes mountains today.
Beyond burning and inhaling its aroma, Palo Santo can be tied with red thread and carried in bags or worn on the body, even fashioned into necklaces. This product is conveniently crafted into prayer beads (price is per strand) and necklaces (46cm length). It is particularly beneficial for those with sensitive constitutions, offering a protective aura. Multiple strands can be worn together for a stylish effect.
