🌸 The Pinnacle of Japanese Painted Ceramics
A Symbol of Luxurious Porcelain - Kutani Ware
🎁 Hailing from Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan (Kaga, Kanazawa, Komatsu, Nomi cities), Kutani Ware is one of Japan's three great ceramic traditions. With nearly 400 years of history, it is renowned for its excellent quality and unique, purely hand-painted and fired craftsmanship.
Kutani Ware is characterized by its distinct features: vibrant colors, bold designs, and often adorned with gold foil, which is the primary source of its luxurious aesthetic. It stands out amongst Japan's many regional ceramic crafts, exuding a gorgeous and noble presence, making it an ideal choice for gifts!
🌈 Translucent Beauty of Crystal Flow and Underglaze Silver Foil
This work originates from Kutani Ware's "Sōshū kiln" and bears the kiln mark on its base. It stands approximately 24 cm tall. Unlike traditional Kutani Ware known for its elaborate painted designs, this piece utilizes Sōshū kiln's specialty, "Yūri Gin Sai." A rare, vivid yellow-green color, uncommon in Kutani Ware, spreads across the vase body, gradually deepening in layers from the near-white rim downwards. The slender neck combined with the full, flowing curves of the body gives the vibrant, bright colors an elegant and light appearance.
"Yūri Gin Sai" involves applying silver foil of various shapes to the vase body, then covering it with transparent or iridescent glaze before high-temperature firing, resulting in jewel-like, translucent gradient colors. The crystal-clear, glass-like glaze and the brilliance of the silver foil interact, creating delicate and rich light effects as the light shifts. Upon close examination, the glaze reveals fine, ice-crack-like textures that subtly appear beneath the translucent sheen, adding further layers to both color and texture.
The tender, bright yellow-green hue is particularly rare in Kutani Ware, lending the piece a fresh, contemporary sensibility within traditional craftsmanship. Whether adorned with a few minimalist sprigs of flowers and greenery, or displayed alone in an entryway, living room, or display cabinet, its clear, flowing colors and luster will add a bright, artistic touch to any space.
