Bodhi Buddhist Artifacts | Japanese Esoteric Buddhist Ritual Implements
Circa 19th–20th Century Vajra Staff
Japanese Esoteric Buddhist Ritual Implement
Vajra Staff
Total Length: 34 cm
Acquired from a Japanese collector,
this item is estimated to be from the 19th–20th century,
representing a religious artifact of approximately one hundred years.
This is a shorter version,
distinct from the longer staffs used by ascetic monks in the mountains.
The sandalwood handle is a later addition,
and the overall piece retains the rustic charm of an old ritual implement.
In Japanese Buddhism and pilgrimage traditions,
the Vajra Staff is often regarded as a personal protective implement for practitioners.
In the past, when ascetic monks traveled mountain paths,
they would shake the staff,
or strike the ground with it to create noise,
to ward off snakes and insects.
It also symbolized the protection of the traveler from evil spirits and malevolent influences.
Related materials also mention that the Vajra Staff has connections to the pilgrimage lineage of Kūkai, the founder of Shingon Buddhism.
Within the faith,
it is seen as a symbol of support, guardianship, and guidance.
While these types of staffs are generally not as highly valued in the market as ritual bells or vajra pestles,
they hold unique cultural and religious significance as collectible Japanese Esoteric Buddhist ritual implements.
Suitable for collectors of Japanese Esoteric Buddhist ritual implements,
religious artifacts,
or as a symbolic piece for space decoration and spiritual practice.
