This book is the first sociological work to analyze Chinese men who identify as gay within contemporary Chinese societies and global cultures from the perspective of "sexual citizenship." Its core material stems from the author's extensive ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 1996 and 2008, encompassing ninety life stories from Hong Kong, London, and mainland China. The book argues that the gay identities emerging in these three locations—whether the dazzling consumerist "memba" of Hong Kong, the "tongzhi" and "money boy" in mainland cities, or the effeminate "golden boy" in London—are all influenced by the transnational currents of global and local queer cultures. By rejecting pre-existing assumptions of global homogenization and local essentialism, this book offers groundbreaking insights into the gender and sexuality of Chinese gay men, while establishing a new theoretical paradigm of "queer hybridity" for transnational Chinese sexual identities, desires, and practices.

**About the Author**
Travis S. K. Kong is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong and the Program Director of the Master of Arts in Media, Culture and Creative Cities. He has long been engaged in research on sexuality/gender, media, and culture. By analyzing and reviewing contemporary Western sociological theories, he examines social phenomena such as homosexuality, the sex industry, and sexual culture in mainland China and Hong Kong, thereby exploring issues of Chinese sexuality, gender, desire, identity, and intimate relationships to arrive at more locally relevant discourse. His major works include *Chinese Male Homosexualities: Memba, Tongzhi and Golden Boy* (London: Routledge, 2011) and *A Chronicle of Men: Oral Histories of Older Gay Men in Hong Kong* (Hong Kong: Further Multimedia Ltd., 2014). His other articles are published in international academic journals such as *Gender, Work & Organization*, *Body & Society*, *Urban Studies*, *British Journal of Criminology*, *Sociological Review*, *Qualitative Research*, *Lancet*, and *AIDS Care*. He is currently one of the editors of the academic journal *Sexualities: Studies in Culture and Society*.
**Praise**
"Through in-depth interviews, vivid personal narratives, and sharp theoretical analysis, Travis Kong presents how Chinese gay men in mainland China, Hong Kong, and the UK are 'made' and 'self-made' in terms of sexual citizenship. Within his analytical framework, power is not monolithic but operates through 'dispersed hegemony,' allowing him to perceive and reveal with particular nuance the spaces individuals carve out between institutions and communities."
— David A. N. LEUNG, Vice President and Chair Professor of Social Studies, The Education University of Hong Kong
"In an era where marriage equality and counter-arguments are increasingly globalized, a cross-regional perspective is crucial for guiding LGBTQ+ studies. This book reveals the multifaceted nature of sex, subjectivity, and power, not only involving geographical movement and the crossing of boundaries but also highlighting cultural translation and structural transformation, making it a highly valuable read."
— PEI-CHIA LAN, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, National Taiwan University
