Design: Dancing Muses designed by John Flaxman II. John Flaxman II's artistic talent and scholarly knowledge, rooted in the Roman and Greek eras, secured his esteemed position within Wedgwood ceramics. He spent seven years living in Rome and Italy, immersing himself in ancient Greco-Roman literature and drawing inspiration from this culture. Inspired by the friezes of the Villa Borghese in Rome from the late 18th century, John Flaxman II designed the "Dancing Muses" motif in the mid-1770s. Originally, there were twelve Muses, but Wedgwood's designs often feature one, three, six, or eight. In Greco-Roman mythology, the Dancing Muses primarily represent the Horae, the goddesses of the seasons. Another interpretation suggests they embody the passage of time from dawn to night through their graceful forms. The border features a laurel wreath motif, symbolizing honor and victory, meticulously handcrafted to showcase the delicate veins of the leaves and the elegant charm of the Muses. Dressed in traditional Greek attire, their flowing garments and graceful poses and forms are brought to life through Wedgwood's traditional techniques, making this a highly collectible Wedgwood piece.
