Prosperity and Good Fortune
The countryside of Yilan resembles the idyllic Peach Blossom Spring, with fertile fields, beautiful ponds, mulberry trees, and well-connected paths where the sounds of chickens and dogs can be heard. Dogs of various appearances often stand guard at the entrances of rural homes, symbolizing safety and protection, and bringing auspicious blessings. The "woof woof" sound, frequently heard in the countryside, is homophonous with the character for "prosperous" (旺). Thus, dogs symbolize prosperity in wealth and family, signifying thriving growth.
During traditional Lunar New Year celebrations, every household hangs red lanterns to create an atmosphere of joy and reunion. These festive lanterns carry the auspicious meaning of "good fortune arriving" (鴻運當頭), as red (紅) sounds similar to "fortune" (鴻).
Blooming before all other flowers, the plum blossom heralds spring and is revered as an auspicious symbol of joyous tidings. A common saying goes, "A branch of plum blossom signifies the passing of the year." The blooming of plum blossoms adds to the festive spirit of the approaching Lunar New Year. The five petals of the plum blossom also symbolize the "Five Blessings" (五福臨門): longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a peaceful end.
