One of the "Birds of Taiwan" postcard series.
Taiwan is a beautiful, abundant island,
nurturing beautiful and unique species.
Yet, as Taiwanese, we often undervalue our motherland.
It is only through the eyes of foreigners that we realize how special, precious, and rare Taiwan truly is.
So this time, it's our turn to share the unique beauty of Taiwan, from Taiwan itself,
introducing Taiwan to those who have yet to discover its charm.
We can proudly tell them:
Our small island boasts high mountains, vast seas, cascading waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, serene lakes...
and also, kind people and precious wildlife.
The Taiwan Blue Magpie (Scientific name: Urocissa caerulea),
also known as Taiwan Black Magpie, Chang Wei Shan Niang (Taiwanese: Tn̂g-bué Suann-niû), Chang Wei Zhen, Shan Niang,
is endemic to Taiwan.
In Volume 28 of the "General History of Taiwan" by Lian Ya-tang, under the section on officials and administration, it is recorded as "Lian Que," with the vernacular description: "Commonly known as Chang Wei Shan Niang, with emerald wings and a vermilion beak, its radiance is captivating."
The Taiwan International Bird Association once organized an online "National Bird Election."
With over a million votes from more than 53 countries worldwide, among four endemic Taiwanese bird species—the Mikado Pheasant, Swinhoe's Pheasant, Taiwan Yellow Tit, and Taiwan Blue Magpie—
the Taiwan Blue Magpie won the preliminary round, securing approximately 490,000 votes against the Mikado Pheasant.
