This small dish is a fusion of white clay, which imparts a rustic warmth, and a straw ash glaze, uniquely blended from rice straw harvested annually. Instead of our usual home electric kiln, this piece was fired in the oil kiln of a pottery studio we are currently working with. It was fired using reduction firing, a method that creates an oxygen-deficient environment within the kiln, resulting in a profound depth of character that cannot be achieved with an electric kiln. The glaze is an original creation from the pottery studio, and they even roast their own rice straw to collect the ash. The resulting color and texture are unlike anything you'll find elsewhere. Each firing of this straw ash glaze yields a unique expression, and this particular batch has produced a simple, appealing color palette reminiscent of whole wheat cookies. It evokes a comforting warmth, allowing you to feel the earthy texture characteristic of pottery. While the glossy areas offer a smooth touch, the areas with thinner glaze have a pleasant grittiness, allowing you to enjoy the tactile qualities of the ceramic. At just over 12cm in diameter, this is a slightly larger small dish. It's perfect as a side dish plate, a dessert plate, or for serving small portions of side dishes like dressed greens or simmered burdock root, and even as a condiment dish. The colors, which highlight the natural earthiness of the material, harmonize beautifully with ingredients that also originate from the earth. We encourage you to enjoy it with a wide variety of foods. All processes, from kneading the clay to shaping, bisque firing, glazing, and final firing, are done by hand in our studio, which is equipped with a small electric kiln and a potter's wheel. While mass production is not possible, each piece has its own unique character, and we hope you will appreciate the artisanal charm that comes from handmade items. The item you will receive is the same as pictured. The base has been sanded to ensure it does not scratch your table surfaces. We are constantly exploring new combinations of glazes and clays, creating a variety of ceramics in different colors and shapes. To prevent this, we treat all our tableware with a food-safe sealant before shipping, so there is no need for an initial "water-stop" treatment (mezome). This sealing process requires 2-3 days, which is why our shipping timeframe is set at 5 days from order placement. If you prefer not to have the sealant applied, please let us know at the time of purchase. - We strive to capture product images that are as true to life as possible, but please be aware that colors may appear differently depending on your monitor settings and lighting conditions. - As this item is also sold on other platforms, in the rare event of overlapping purchases, the item will be allocated to the customer who completes the purchase process first.
