Baikei Stream | Exploring Our Hometown's River

In contemporary society, Puli, a region blessed with abundant water resources, has cultivated many well-known water-related industries, such as handmade paper, Shaoxing wine, water shield, and mineral water. Today, factors like climate change, environmental pollution, and shifts in water usage habits pose severe challenges to Puli's water resources. The relationship between people and rivers has been severed by embankments, rendering streams an invisible presence in daily life. We conducted on-site visits to Meixi and its surrounding settlements, observing the rich ethnic cultures, agricultural irrigation systems, aromatic plants, soil collection, ecological environment, and water usage habits along its banks. Meixi harbors numerous protected fish and bird species, and it is also the lifeblood of Puli's crucial irrigation canals. This book documents our experiences and reflections from visiting Meixi over the past year. It records our journeys walking on roads and riverbeds, offering comparative perspectives on Meixi, witnessing the interactions and reverence different ethnic groups hold for this stream, and discovering its abundance of aromatic plants, integrating them into our contemporary lives and applications. This is the first publication in Puli themed around a stream, a journal that combines exploration, collection, and inspiration. It is also the first book to discuss Baikei.
