Cinnabar, also known as 辰砂, 丹砂, 赤丹, or 汞沙, is mercuric sulfide ranging from vermilion to brick red. Historically, cinnabar was also a source for refining vermilion or bright red pigments. Its color and properties originate from its hexagonal crystal system, with crystals sometimes exhibiting twinning. For instance, natural pigments used in Thangka painting traditionally incorporated precious minerals and gemstones such as gold, silver, pearls, agate, coral, lapis lazuli, malachite, and cinnabar, alongside plants like saffron, rhubarb, and indigo for accents.
Cinnabar is generally categorized into two types: purple-gold cinnabar with visible crystals, and imperial red cinnabar. Their red hues differ slightly. Purple-gold cinnabar tends to be a deeper red than imperial red, and it features the distinct cinnabar crystals that make it so appealing to many. Imperial red cinnabar, on the other hand, has fewer visible crystals to the naked eye, presenting a full, rich vermilion color with a more refined finish. It is typically priced higher than purple-gold cinnabar.
Cinnabar Care
The primary component of cinnabar is mercuric sulfide, but it often contains impurities like realgar and apatite. It is prone to dissolving and losing color when exposed to water. Furthermore, prolonged immersion in water can cause loosely textured cinnabar to disintegrate. Therefore, it is best to avoid contact with water when wearing cinnabar. Cinnabar should also be kept away from direct flame, as burning will cause it to turn black. Additionally, heating cinnabar above 180 degrees Celsius in the presence of oxygen can lead to partial oxidation and the release of a small amount of mercury.
