Neriage, meaning the combination of different colored clays, involves arranging different colored clays to form patterns, much like a floral sushi roll, into a long cylindrical shape. When sliced, this yields multiple pieces of clay with similar patterns, which are then sculpted into a dish. Vessels made using the Neriage technique possess unique characteristics: the patterns appear on both the front and back. Due to the Neriage method, the patterns undergo natural deformation during the crafting process, such as stretching and twisting, as if the patterns themselves are alive and moving.
Made with Japanese porcelain clay, fired at 1230°C.
