◎ Lapis lazuli is one of the seven treasures of Buddhism, and its color is the body color of Medicine Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism. Many lapis lazuli on the market are heat-treated and dyed. You can soak lapis lazuli in alcohol to determine if it has been heat-treated; if the color fades, it is dyed. Furthermore, lapis lazuli with abundant pyrite (gold flecks) or calcite (white patches) is considered lower quality, while the opposite indicates a premium piece.
Lapis lazuli is primarily composed of four natural minerals: lazulite (deep blue), sodalite (white), hauyne (light blue), and nosean. The golden flecks on the surface are pyrite, and the white streaks are due to a higher content of sodalite. Therefore, lapis lazuli with minimal pyrite and sodalite, and a deep blue hue, is considered top-grade.
How to identify dyed lapis lazuli?
Many lapis lazuli on the market are heat-treated and dyed. Soaking lapis lazuli in alcohol can reveal if it has been heat-treated; color loss indicates dyeing. Lapis lazuli with abundant pyrite (gold flecks) or sodalite (white patches) is considered a lower quality specimen, whereas minimal pyrite and sodalite signify premium lapis lazuli. Similar to Red Agate, it is rare to find larger lapis lazuli pieces with minimal white patches or flecks. Most lapis lazuli over 10mm will exhibit some white areas or dots from sodalite.
How to care for lapis lazuli and what to avoid?
Lapis lazuli is sensitive to high temperatures. Prolonged exposure to strong light can affect its luster and color, so it's advisable to be mindful of this during outdoor activities. Additionally, prolonged soaking is not recommended for lapis lazuli (unlike Tridacna shells), as its porous structure can absorb moisture, impacting its color and appearance. It's best to remove lapis lazuli jewelry when bathing. Avoid contact with acidic or alkaline substances such as shampoos, body washes, cosmetics, and perfumes, as these can cause chemical reactions and damage the surface.
