No More Than 30
**Vaquita Iridescent Postcard**
The vaquita, sharing its habitat with the high-value totoaba, is often accidentally caught alongside it.
Data from late last year indicates that fewer than 30 individuals now remain.
Thus, while this series is named "No More Than 10,000," for the vaquita, it should perhaps be "No More Than 30."
.
The vaquita are inevitably heading towards extinction.
This inspired me to create this artwork: the remaining population of vaquitas soaring through the sky.
Beneath them swims a group of fellow creatures, including: Yangtze river dolphin, Japanese sea lion, Caribbean monk seal, Steller's sea cow, and others.
These are all species that have recently gone extinct due to human activities.
They appear as ethereal spirits, swimming alongside the tangible vaquitas,
because the vaquitas are soon to share the same fate—extinction.
.
Regardless, the disappearance of any species is a sorrowful event,
and we can only watch helplessly as this irreversible end unfolds.
.
The elegy for the vanishing vaquita will reach its final chapter in the coming years, or perhaps even months.
Of course, there are many other species disappearing from the world, unnoticed by many.
My hope is for a continued shift in human consciousness,
to no longer take the existence of nature and its species for granted, and to amend our attitudes towards the natural world.
