Sapphires have fabulous shimmer and many hues. They represent wisdom, prosperity and discipline of the mind. Sapphire belongs to the corundum family. On the hardness scale, it is second only to diamond (9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale!). Along with diamond, emerald and alexandrite, it belongs to the first group of gemstones. Translated from the ancient Greek, sapphire means “blue stone”. But this does not mean that the blue color is the stone's hallmark. Nature did not skimp on colors for sapphire. The stone can be of all colors of the rainbow (yellow, green, pink, orange, purple). But not red; corundum of this color is called “ruby”. Although, in fact, it is the same mineral.
