Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara was born on December 5, 1959. His eclectic creations are world-famous for his cartoon-like paintings of melancholy children and animals. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts, he went to study at the Dusseldorf Art Academy in the late 1980s, where he continued to draw inspiration from Eastern and Western cultures throughout his life. Nara's childhood during Japan's postwar period (when more and more people were exposed to Western popular culture, such as comic books, Disney animation, and pop music), is often cited as an early influence on Nara's work. Although he has always said that he did not draw inspiration from Japanese comics, his unique large-eyed portraits often prompt art critics to compare the two. Instead, he insists that by pairing innocent children with cynical expressions or out-of-place objects (such as sharp knives), his works elevate him to a different spiritual and spiritual level, reflecting on important issues of religion and philosophy.
