※ Author Introduction
Arthur Conan Doyle [United Kingdom] (1859 ~ 1930)
A British detective novelist and physician. After graduating from the University of Edinburgh Medical School, Doyle practiced medicine in Plymouth. However, his practice was not very successful, so he turned to writing. In 1887, "A Study in Scarlet," featuring Sherlock Holmes, was Doyle's first detective novel. It was widely acclaimed, leading him to write fifty-six short stories and four novels. Doyle, using Watson's perspective, depicted Holmes's thrilling and tumultuous detective life in a documentary-like style, guiding readers step-by-step to grasp the truth of judicial justice.
Sima Qian [China] (c. 145 BC ~ c. 90 BC)
A literary scholar and historian of the Western Han Dynasty. Because he defended Li Ling's surrender, he angered Emperor Wu of Han and suffered the humiliation of castration. Enduring this disgrace, Sima Qian was determined to complete his grand historical work, finishing the compilation of "Shiji" in 91 BC, which has been passed down to the present day and is widely recognized as a model of Chinese historiography. Later generations respectfully referred to Sima Qian as "Shi Qian" and "Taishi Gong." "Shiji" records over 3,000 years of history, from the Yellow Emperor of antiquity to Emperor Wu of Han, and is ranked first among the Twenty-Four Histories (the Twenty-Four Histories include: "Shiji," "Book of Han," "Records of the Three Kingdoms," etc.). Its pioneering use of the "biographical" method of compiling history, establishing biographies for individuals, marked a departure from previous chronological narratives. This method was inherited by subsequent official histories, profoundly influencing later historiography and literature.

"One Thousand and One Nights," also known as "Arabian Nights," originated from Eastern oral literature. Compiled in Arabic around the 9th century, it gathers folk tales from the Persian, Indian, and Arab worlds. Between the 10th and 16th centuries, through the hands of many individuals, it was continuously adapted and revised, gradually taking its final form. It is a brilliant pearl of Arabic literature, hailed as "the most magnificent monument" in the history of folklore.
After its compilation, it circulated within the Arab region until the early 18th century when it was introduced to the West. In 1704, the Frenchman Antoine Galland first translated some of the stories into French, followed by English translations, which further broadened its reach. It was then transmitted from the West to China in the early 20th century.
The entire work is presented in a story-within-a-story framework. Each night may contain many small stories, and each major story can span multiple nights. The themes are diverse, including love, adventure, and moral fables. The settings span vast regions, from heaven to earth, interspersed with beautiful and moving lyrical poetry. Beneath its mystical facade, one can glimpse various aspects of social life and the voices of ordinary people.
