After graduating from the University of Edinburgh Medical School, Doyle practiced medicine in Plymouth. However, his practice was not very successful, so he turned to writing. In 1887, "A Study in Scarlet," featuring Sherlock Holmes, was Doyle's first detective novel. It was widely acclaimed, leading him to write fifty-six short stories and four novels. Its pioneering use of the "biographical" method of compiling history, establishing biographies for individuals, marked a departure from previous chronological narratives. In 1704, the Frenchman Antoine Galland first translated some of the stories into French, followed by English translations, which further broadened its reach. It was then transmitted from the West to China in the early 20th century. The entire work is presented in a story-within-a-story framework.
