About Wood Firing Wood firing is a traditional kiln method, reaching temperatures above 1200°C using firewood. The natural "fire marks" left by the direct flame on the clay body, and the ash that naturally falls from the burning wood, give the pieces a warm, rich, and varied color palette that cannot be achieved by electric or gas kilns. Compared to standard electric and gas kilns, the entire wood firing process—from stacking the kiln, igniting the fire, sealing the kiln, to cooling—takes approximately 8-10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors such as humidity, wood dryness, the pace of stoking the fire, and the placement within the kiln, can all influence the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher rate of breakage. Experienced wood-firing artisans carefully consider the airflow dynamics when stacking the kiln, planning the placement of pieces of different sizes, estimating the path of the flames, determining how and when to stoke the fire and charcoal, and controlling the heat.
