She moved to Michigan, USA with her parents in 1977. She was named one of the 100 most influential artists by Time magazine in 2020. According to data, the total transaction amount of Mehretu's works at auction is about 220 million US dollars, making her one of the best-selling living female artists today. Famous institutions such as MoMA and the Brooklyn Museum have collected her works since the early 2000s and attributed the concept of reinventing abstraction in the 21st century to Mehretu.
