The Saint's Crown, also known as Echinocactus grusonii, is a succulent plant in the Cactaceae family. It typically has a spherical shape and is dark green or gray-green in color. Mature plants easily grow side shoots, have fibrous roots, and possess 2-8 spines with tubercles attached to the ribs. The most distinctive feature of the Saint's Crown is its subtle cracking, resembling a green mochi ball with a few spines inserted. It generally has fewer ribs, with 5 ribs being its characteristic feature, along with variations of 4 and 3 ribs. The fewer the ribs, the more precious and rare it is, thus commanding a higher price. The 5-ribbed variety is most common, while those with more than 5 ribs are more likely to be hybrids.
Care Tips
The Saint's Crown thrives in full sun or partial shade, placed in a well-ventilated area, and planted in a well-draining medium. Summer is the growing season for the Saint's Crown, and watering should be reduced or stopped in winter. This genus (Echinocactus) requires a relatively high level of fertilizer; it is recommended to provide ample fertilizer to promote growth. This genus roots well and grows vigorously. Varieties that branch and produce side shoots can be easily propagated through their offsets. However, new species are often cultivated through sowing, with seedlings emerging in about 3-4 weeks. Some species flower only after 1-2 years, and most species cannot self-pollinate; fruits develop well after artificial pollination.
During summer growth, keep the soil moist, provide partial shade, and enhance ventilation. In winter, keep the soil dry, ensure ample sunlight, and maintain a temperature no lower than 5Β°C.
Flowering
The Saint's Crown flowers are pink, pinkish-white, or rose-red, with darker stripes on the petals. The blooms last for several days, typically appearing in spring and autumn. They are self-pollinating.
Cultivation Notes
During cultivation, death is unlikely unless major mistakes are made, and the plant will flower when it reaches a certain size. Due to variations in their native habitats, the specific growing environments and care conditions for each species differ. It is sensitive to excessive moisture, so the soil needs to be airy and loose.
π Key highlights: Drought-tolerant, full or partial sun, well-ventilated with good drainage, water once a week in summer, water every 6 weeks in winter, prefers fertilizer.
